Germany's prohibited item list
What constitutes a prohibited item and why should I check before shipping my package to Germany?
Prohibited Items
Prohibited items are goods that are not permitted to be transported in the vehicles and network of carriers. This includes obvious items such as weapons, drugs, and explosives, as well as less apparent items like batteries, perishable food, and any type of liquids. The list of prohibited items is specific to each carrier and can be quite extensive. To view the complete list, please click the button below.
Items protected for loss only
The carriers do allow a range of items to be be dispatched using their systems that they will not provide protection cover for in the event of any damages, even if additional cover is chosen during the booking process. In these instances, the carriers will only offer compensation in the case of a lost parcel. Some examples of these items include surfboards, antiques, fishing rods, etc. To see the complete list, please click on the Prohibited Items List button below.
No Protection items
For some items, the carriers will allow them to be transported within their carrier network, but without any protection. These items include precious metals and stones, watches, ceramics, artwork etc. They can be transported, and are not prohibited, but they are not able to be protected by enhanced cover.
It is always worth checking prior to sending your parcel to Germany to see if it can be covered.
Are Commercial Invoices needed for Germany?
Yes! Our system utilises both paper commercial invoices and a digital/ paperless commercial invoice known Paperless Trade (PLT). It is important however to note that not all countries currently accept paperless commercial invoices. In such cases, our system will provide guidance on when to use paper commercial invoice documents instead.
When sending a package to Germany, it is crucial to consider customs rules and fees. The fees can be covered by either the customer (DDU) or the sender (DDP), depending on the chosen incoterm during the booking process.
At Ordersort, our system will ensure a streamlined process for generating your customs documentation, and a stress-free experience when your parcels arrive at customs in Germany.
-
Delivered Duty Unpaid
This incoterm is commonly used by most shippers, indicating that the recipient of the goods will be responsible for paying the duties and related fees.
-
Delivered Duty Paid
This option is better for high margin goods that are able to swallow the duties and fees associated with the clearance of the goods through customs, as duties and any fees will be charged to the sender, rather than the receiver.

Transit Times to Germany?
When sending a parcel to Germany, transit times are generally consistent among the major carriers, however if the destination address is in an extended area, this may increase time in transit.
Also important to consider is your distance from your local collection depot. The couriers begin their collection routes with an empty vehicle at the further point from their collection depot and work back towards the collection depot, filling their vehicle as they go. If your address is further away from a collection depot, you may an earlier cut-off time for same day collection and could find that you will need next-day collection with that courier, adding a day to your shipping time.
To combat this specific issue, the couriers offer timed services, which typically have later cut-off times for same-day collection, and are usually collected and delivered as a priority, meaning those urgent shipments that you need to send don’t need to wait until tomorrow for collection. As Germany is renowned for its efficiency, this will certainly please your receiver!
Whether your parcel is super urgent or there is really no rush, we will have a service that works for both your shipping and accounts departments!
